The Opioid Epidemic and Dentistry:  Current Issues and Implications for Patient Care

Speaker: DR. Arthur H. Jeske, Ph.D., D.M.D.

Course Overview

The Opioid Epidemic now claims well over 100,000 lives per year in the United States but there is now an indication that the upward trajectory of overdose deaths is abating.  The complexity of the epidemic has increased, however, due to the use of adulterants and new classes of addictive substances.  Health care professionals, including dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistants, should understand the evolving pattern of illicit drug use in the U.S., as well as the types of drugs being diverted and abused, to provide safe dental treatment to patients who may be affected by addiction.  This program updates dental professionals on the current status of the Opioid Epidemic, current strategies for the management of acute dental pain, and related topics, including the management of opioid intoxication.

Key Topics & Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

• Review the scope and current status of the opioid epidemic and related issues;
• Select screening tools for the identification of dental patients with substance used disorders;
• Review appropriate drug therapies for managing acute dental pain with and without opioids;
• Understand the fundamental management of opioid overdose.
