This presentation is designed to help dental practitioners screen, diagnose, and either treat or refer patients for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Participants will learn the fundamentals of OSA, including its systemic effects, epidemiology, and in-office screening protocols. Additionally, the presentation will cover the application of current treatment approaches for OSA in adults.

Course Objectives:

1. Understand an effective approach to initial in-office screening, including the importance of the STOP-BANG questionnaire, physical and radiographic examinations, and symptomatic impact.
2. Recognize the differences between a home sleep apnea test (HSAT) and a lab-based polysomnography.
3. Learn about current medical management strategies for OSA patients, including lifestyle modifications, oral appliance therapy, and positive airway pressure devices.
4. Understand the surgical algorithm for OSA management, with an emphasis on identifying the level of airway obstruction using drug-induced sleep endoscopy.
5. Explore surgical management options based on the level of obstruction, including nasal surgery, palatal surgery, tongue-based procedures, and maxillary and mandibular advancement for lateral pharyngeal wall collapse.
