“Diagnosis and Management of Common Medical Emergencies

Encountered in the Dental Office”

Medical emergencies can occur anytime or anywhere.  The stress induced with dental treatments can precipitate an emergency in your office.  This presentation will cover the clinical findings and management of the most common emergencies reported in the dental office setting.  

Learning Objectives:

  • Develop a differential diagnosis for common medical emergencies
  • Understand the physiology of these common medical emergencies
  • Understand the clinical management of emergencies
  • Understand the pharmacology in the management of common medical emergencies

David M. Grogan, DDS, MSD

Dr. David Grogan is currently Associate Professor and Chair in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Texas A&M University College of Dentistry in Dallas, Texas.

Dr. Grogan received his Dental Education at Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, Texas and his certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.  Dr. Grogan was in private practice in Waco, Texas for 14 years prior to his appointment at TAMU College of Dentistry. Dr. Grogan has many teaching duties in both the undergraduate and graduate curriculum at TAMU College of Dentistry.  Dr. Grogan has also been very active in professional organizations locally, regionally and on a national level.

Dr. Bill Gerlach attended Northwestern University in Chicago from 1980-1983, and then attended Texas A&M College of Dentistry, or TIFKAB (The Institute Formerly Known As Baylor). He and his wife, Dr. Lynne Gerlach, were in the Baylor Class of ’87.

Bill is a restorative dentist from Plano, and has served in most leadership positions within Dallas County Dental Society, serving as President in 2011. He is a Fellow in ICD and ACD, and has trained extensively with The Pankey Institute and Spear Education.  He served on the TDA Board of Directors from 2013-2016.

Outside of dentistry, Bill’s interests are leadership, innovation and entrepreneurialism, not to mention fun on the golf course with friends.  He attends St. Andrew UMC, and has two grown children, Meredith and Creighton, both living in the Dallas area.
