  tooth's restoration history using a restorative dissection process which 
 provides a dentist the opportunity to directly assess the foundational are
 as of a tooth. This process is similar to how archeologists use step wise 
 excavation of ancient sites and the subsequent analysis of artifacts to pr
 ovide insight which can't be obtained using other techniques. This process
  provides for a more accurate diagnosis which can lead to improved outcome
 s for both the patient and the dentist. Various patterns of failure seen i
 n everyday clinical situations will be discussed as well as a system to im
