CADS Dentist of the Year - Dr. Karen Frazer
Published: Aug 2, 2009
CADS Dentist of the Year 2009

Dr. Karen Frazer was awarded the Capital Area Dental Society Dentist of the Year during the Capital Area Dental Society Installation of Officers Dinner at the beautiful Mandola Estate Trattoria Lisina.

Dr. Kelp had the honor of presenting the award, and knowing Karen’s shy nature, called her up to introduce her as our newly elected Southeast Director of the Texas Dental Association. While there, he casually mentioned her many accomplishments and dedication to organized dentistry and said to her that, “since you are up here anyway, it is an honor to present you with the CADS Dentist of the Year Award”.

Dr. Frazer was truly surprised but it is hardly a surprise that she was selected to receive this coveted award having served as treasurer, secretary, president-elect, and president of CADS for starters. Karen has just completed a remarkable task as Chair of the Texas Dental Association Annual Sessions Council. Years of planning go into such a large dental meeting and even with the sagging economy, the meeting did not suffer in quality or attendance.

Karen was very active as a member of the Greater Houston Dental Society prior to moving to Austin. There she served on many committees including the Media Committee, Judicial & Ethics Committee, Legislative Action Committee, and Young Dentists Committee, serving as Chair. She was Co-Chair and then Chair of Registration for the Greater Houston Dental Meeting for nine years. She also served on the Dental Health Committee.

In our Capital Area Dental Society, Dr. Frazer has Chaired the Public Relations Committee and has served on the Nominating Committee. She has always been active in the Gala & Fundraising Committee. She served in all executive offices of CADS ultimately serving as President in the 2005-2006 year.

Karen has also been very giving at the state level of organized dentistry with her service to the Texas Dental Association. Besides having just completed five years on the Annual Sessions Council, she served on the Building Committee, the Judicial & Ethics Council for seven years, Chairing in 2003-2004. She served on the Regional Advisory Committee for CHIPS for two years and has been an Alternate Delegate or Delegate of TDA continuously since 1989. Again representing Houston and then CADS. She was on the Governmental Affairs Reference Committee in 1996.

Her dedication to the profession doesn’t stop there however; she has also represented Texas dentists on the national level as an Alternate Delegate since 2004 and served on two ADA Reference Committees, Membership & Communication.

While living in Houston, Karen served as a director of the Ft. Bend Women’s Refuge Center.  She was active in the Ft. Bend Chamber, the Jewish Federation, the Women’s Professional Business Group, and the Lutheran Church. Here in Austin, she has been in involved in the Rotary for five years.

Karen's hobbies include scuba diving, jewelry making, walking, reading, gardening, horseback riding, kayaking, hiking, skiing, and knitting. Her favorite vacation spot is a cabin in the woods in the mountains near Cloudcroft, New Mexico or a nice place to scuba dive.

Dr. Frazer has two sons, Chris Meyer who is 23 and works full time and lives in East Austin, and Harrison Miller who is 16 and a junior at Westlake High School where he is on the soccer team. Karen says that she is definitely a soccer mom having had to haul him around to soccer events since he was 5.

I asked Karen to share with us something that most of us might be surprised to learn about her. She responded by saying that she studied jewelry fabrication for three years at the Glassell School of Art.

Congratulations to Karen for her dedication to organized dentistry and for representing our profession well serving the community!
