Is Now the Time?
My past experiences with the Nominating Committee of the Capital Area Dental Society has given me some insight into why some members that are asked to serve CADS on a committee or as an officer are hesitant. The way the nominating committee works is the committee consists of the current Executive Committee and at several general membership meetings, members are asked to place names in nomination to be on the Nominating Committee. The person that receives the most votes becomes the Chair of the Nominations Committee for that year.
The committee convenes armed with a full membership roster and a list of positions that need to be filled to keep CADS running smoothly. There is discussion about each position and the group agrees to offer the opportunity to serve to that individual. A phone call is made and the person is asked if they would serve the Capital Area Dental Society in that capacity. Most are surprisingly eager to serve, they just needed to be asked. One exception is agreeing to be Treasurer. This is not because this is that difficult of a job, but it is unique because it involves a commitment to serve on the executive ladder. The next year that person is the Secretary and the following year the President-Elect, then President and finally, the most coveted position of Immediate Past-President.
We hear many understandable reasons why it is not yet a good time for someone to make that commitment:
