Is Now the Time?
My past experiences with the Nominating Committee of the Capital Area Dental Society has given me some insight into why some members that are asked to serve CADS on a committee or as an officer are hesitant. The way the nominating committee works is the committee consists of the current Executive Committee and at several general membership meetings, members are asked to place names in nomination to be on the Nominating Committee. The person that receives the most votes becomes the Chair of the Nominations Committee for that year.
The committee convenes armed with a full membership roster and a list of positions that need to be filled to keep CADS running smoothly. There is discussion about each position and the group agrees to offer the opportunity to serve to that individual. A phone call is made and the person is asked if they would serve the Capital Area Dental Society in that capacity. Most are surprisingly eager to serve, they just needed to be asked. One exception is agreeing to be Treasurer. This is not because this is that difficult of a job, but it is unique because it involves a commitment to serve on the executive ladder. The next year that person is the Secretary and the following year the President-Elect, then President and finally, the most coveted position of Immediate Past-President.
We hear many understandable reasons why it is not yet a good time for someone to make that commitment: “My practice is not yet well established and I need to devote more time to that now…call me later.” Or, “we have children and spend all of our time with school activities and soccer.” This is quite understandable. It may even be that you have had intentions of being more involved in your dental society, whether it be on a committee, or as an officer and you have been waiting for someone to ask and never did!
If you have ever had an interest in service to CADS and your profession in a very gratifying and meaningful way, now is your chance! Maybe you are even semi-retired or retired but still want something structured to do with your time, this could be perfect for you. There is some work involved, but there are many benefits as well. Working with colleagues and getting to know one another better is a great reward in itself. Helping others and making a difference in your community is very satisfying. If this is your time or you know a member that has past obligations behind them now and you think they are interested in getting the most out of belonging to CADS, speak up or nominate them yourself during the membership meeting in February! |
