T-MOM 2008 What an Eye Opener!
When I walked in the door Friday afternoon coming from the T-MOM in Leander, my wife Linda asked me, “how did it go?” I said, “What an eye opener! I didn’t realize how bad things were in our own backyard.” There are a lot of oral health problems with our fellow Texans due to neglect and unaffordable dentistry. These are the same folks that end up in our emergency rooms with swollen faces and unbearable pain because they can’t afford to pay our fees.
Now this is not an article about dental fees and the cost of keeping our doors open. As healthcare providers and business owners most of us know about bottom lines. Personally, I’m not a strong advocate of providing a lot of volunteer charity dentistry in my private office, especially with the high overhead costs. God only knows (and the computer) how much we give away involuntarily each month. But I do think we need to be aware and be in tune with the number of people that can’t afford private practice dentistry. As caring dentists we really need to make time to work in the T-MOM’s, the dental charity vans, Manos de Cristo dental clinic, etc.
It’s been said many times that in all organizations, whether it be at the professional, church, or community level, there are always the “faithful fifty” that show up and give their time and/or resources when the call to serve is made. Thanks to the Stan LaCroix’s, the Beverly Zinser’s, the Kavin Kelp’s, the Barry Rouch’s, the Dan Loving’s, and the other 45 that are always there to serve, CADS does show up. Forgive me if I left your name out of one of the 50 (you know who you are) but we would love to expand this to include all our CADS members, thus becoming the “Faithful 500”.
Our society has been known as an exemplary society when it comes to serving and giving to our community and beyond, but there is so much more to be done. I ask of you, when the call comes to help out your fellow brothers and sisters and sharing your talents (we are blessed to have such talents) please say “yes”, or “absolutely”, or “I would love to help out” at least a couple times a year. With over 500 CADS members, that’s a lot of good help for our fellow Texans from the greatest dental society in the great state of Texas. They will never forget you.
