Dr. Barry Rouch Named CADS Dentist of the Year![]() Dr. Rouch was surprised at the officer installation meeting in May when he was named as the Capital Area Dental Society Dentist of the Year. Barry is a very active local orthodontist within the profession as well as within the community.
Dr. Rouch served as CADS President during the 2006-2007 term and has been a member of the Board of Directors since 2003. He served three years on the Peer Review Committee, two times as a TDA Alternate Delegate, TDA Reference Committee Member, and Special Events Committee Member for five years.
Barry is a Member of the Board of the Capital Area Dental Foundation since it’s inception and is very involved in organized dentistry. He served as President of the Austin Orthodontic Study Group from 2004 through 2007 and is a member of the Southwest Society of Orthodontists and the American Association of Orthodontists.
He is dedicated to continuing education and participates in continuums and study groups that reach all aspects of dentistry enhancing multidisciplinary treatment. He continues the Kois Course Curriculum in Seattle, which he began in 2006.
Dr. Rouch studied Biology at Trinity University in San Antonio where he was born, and completed dental school and earned D.D.S. (1982) and Masters of Science from UTDB Houston finishing in 1984. Barry is married to Sandy West who is a marketing executive.
Barry practiced orthodontics in Switzerland from 1987 to 1997. He was interested in learning functional orthopedics in Europe. Upon his return to Austin he became immediately active in organized dentistry and within the community.
He is an active member of the Riverbend Church and has been involved in Mobile Loaves and Fishes Outreach Ministry since the organization’s inception in 1998. He works with MLF to provide clothing, food, and dignity to those in need. He drives a catering truck on many Tuesday evenings to the people living on the streets and dispenses clothes, food, toothbrushes, and hope to these people. In addition, Barry has worked to directly provide shelter for the homeless. The following is an excerpt from something Barry has written that describes his love for the profession and his unselfish character.
“The greatest honor we can have in dentistry is to give back to the community. Our practice recently received community recognition through the Austin American Statesman and their Season of Caring program over the holidays. I was deeply moved by an article in the Statesman about a mentally disabled homeless 63 year-old man named Jimmy Northen living under a bridge in downtown Austin. I decided that I could make a difference by changing a life. Rather than buying holiday gifts for referring doctors, I took those funds as well as money I raised in my practice to buy Jimmy a home - a travel trailer to keep him safe and warm - and get him off the streets.”
“I raised community awareness within my practice by having a “Jimmy Christmas Tree” with wish tags from Jimmy. Our patient family was welcome to join in our endeavor buying gifts or making any monetary contribution. I wanted to let even our young patients know that they could make a difference. This endeavor was undertaken with the help of Family Eldercare of Austin and Mobile Loaves and Fishes. It was an awesome experience when Jimmy received his trailer on December 19, 2007 and nighttime temperatures were in the 20’s. A very touching article was in the Statesman on Christmas Eve 2007 capturing the day. That is what I call success in dentistry…beyond a restoration or a good occlusion. We as dentists are afforded the opportunity to make a difference.”
This is actually the second time that Barry helped to shelter the disadvantaged. In 2005, his practice bought a home for a family from Nicaragua here in Austin. Currently, his office is having a fan drive for the poor and elderly in Austin.
Congratulations to Dr. Rouch on this most special award and deserved recognition!
