"Troubled
Bones: The Land between the Cortices is a
Boundless
Space for Confusion and Pain”
A dentist must interpret scores, even
hundreds of radiographs daily and has the responsibility for diagnosing or at least
explaining any and all abnormalities noted. However, an entire world of
ischemic, inflammatory and reactive bone/marrow disorders exist with odd,
minimal or no radiographic change but with a major, major potential for
producing mild to severe pain. Such conditions, often part of an underlying
systemic problem, have been largely ignored by dentistry but are well known to
medicine. The recent interest in bisphosphonate-associated osteonecrosis and
implant failures has underscored their importance to dentistry. This clinically
relevant seminar will review these "troubled bones”, based largely on Dr.
Bouquot’s four decades of work in this arena. Participants will receive a copy
of the very popular "BouquotToGo” CD with Power Point presentations containing
more than 3,000 high quality, copyright free photos.
Objectives: Upon completion of this presentation, participants will
have a better understanding of:
- The clinical
presentation of a variety of painful marrow disorders, several with
systemic implications
- The appropriate
diagnostic workup of such disorders, including new imaging technologies
- The differential
diagnosis of ischemic and inflammatory jawbone diseases
- The treatment options for
ischemic and inflammatory jawbone diseases
Jerry Bouquot, DDS, MSD, DABOMP, FAAOMP, FICD, FADI, FACD
Professor and
Chair, Department of Diagnostic & Biomedical Sciences,
University of Texas School of Dentistry, Houston, Texas
Adjunct Professor, West Virginia University School of Dentistry,

Dr. Bouquot was trained at the
University of Minnesota and has been a department chair for 24 years, in two
dental schools. He
is the only practicing oral pathologist to take a Fellowship in Bone Pathology (Mayo Clinic). He is co-author of the most popular textbook
of oral pathology and has been President of the American Board of Oral &
Maxillofacial Pathology, a Senior Visiting Scientist of the Mayo Clinic,
President of three national oral pathology organizations and a member of the
national Board of Directors of the American Cancer Society. He has won numerous
teaching, service and research awards, including the St. George Medal, the
highest award given by the American Cancer Society. Recently, the Texas Medical
Center gave him the Fleming and Davenport Award for original research and the
University of Minnesota gave him its Distinguished Alumnus Award. He has
published more than 290 papers, abstracts and book chapters, and has given well
over 1,200 continuing education and research talks around the world. In his
seminars he emphasizes clinical features of disease, differential diagnosis and
disease management, with much practical information based on his lifetime
experience in an active clinical oral pathology/oral medicine practice and in
one of the nation’s largest oral pathology biopsy services. Dr. Bouquot’s
precancer, oral disease epidemiology and bone ischemia research has been cited
thousands of times in the literature and he has been a member of two
international Task Forces related to jawbone ischemia. He manages the world’s
most popular oral pathology websites, including oralpath.com, which
collectively receives almost 7,000,000 hits annually. His Power Point
presentations on common oral lesions and ischemic bone disease are used by
dental professionals worldwide.
