Q.  I have this bump on the inside of my lip. It doesn’t hurt and is bluish in color.  It is a little bigger than pea size. I have had it for about two weeks but I don’t remember how I got it. I don’t have any risk factors for cancer, as I am too young to smoke or drink.

A.  The bump described is common and usually the result of an accidental biting of the lip resulting in a hematoma.  A hematoma is an area of trapped blood. Even though this is the most likely the case based upon the discoloration, an evaluation by a dentist is recommended. These will not normally resolve on their own and may require removal if it is in an area that is obvious or is likely to be bitten again due to the size and location.
