Q.  I bit the side of my tongue, and now one week later my tongue is still sore and swollen in the morning. It is very sensitive-anything I can use like a rinse?

A.  Typically intraoral injuries such as tongue biting heal rapidly due to the abundance of blood vessels in the area. It is possible that the site has become infected.  Either the injury was quite severe or this is the case. It would be wise to have your dentist look at it for proper care at which time an antibiotic might be indicated.  There are anesthetic mouthwashes that can be prescribed if this affects eating. Thank you for the question.
